As an independent publisher, we seek to engage people creatively, emotionally, and physically through beautifully crafted, meaningful books and other printed ephemera. Our passion for writing, ideas, art, and design informs our multidisciplinary approach to acquiring and producing content, allowing us to engage with work regardless of genre; this fluidity provides the opportunity to foreground the look and feel of the book no matter the topic.

History

Nevermore Press (NP) was established by editor and former civil rights lawyer Ernie Hadley and his wife/assistant editor Annie Mullins in 2018. Having moved up from Massachusetts in order to fulfill Ernie’s dream of being a publisher, and immersing themselves in the Canadian literary landscape, they set off with the goal to share stories from and about Atlantic Canada, a geography they had fallen in love with after visiting over the last 30 years.

As a small team, we published 12 fantastic books, established relationships with amazing indie bookstores across the Atlantic region, were nominated (and won) a handful of awards, and contributed a small piece to the Canadian publishing puzzle.

In the spring of 2021, Ernie died unexpectedly, leaving a gaping hole in our small company. Faced with shuttering, Jayme Spinks, NP’s art director and production manager since the beginning, decided to continue Ernie’s unique and vital vision. Under new ownership, Jayme’s background as a graphic designer and printer has further deepened NP’s focus on design and production—both physically and conceptually—and reinvigorated efforts to publish underrepresented voices. As Nevermore evolves, Ernie’s desire to share important stories continues to guide our work. He is missed.
